the RESTORE 2012 details:

July 21-30, 2012

St. Louis du Nord, Haiti

RESTORE is an in-Haiti retreat that awakens, equips and empowers next generation leaders to bring cultural change to their communities. We want the core students of your youth ministry, college age ministry or campus ministry. Students and leaders who are primed to be world changers on campus, in the workplace and in their communities. Students who are hungry for a different way.

The experience of Haiti joined with teaching, worship and reflection brings forth a response beyond what a formal trip or camp experience can provide. It also equips and empowers a movement of awakened Christ followers to live the gospel throughout their everyday lives. This is an opportunity for two worlds to collide and bring forth a beautiful new perspective. A perspective that recognizes a suffering world and begins to see it through the eyes of Jesus. Most importantly this is the opportunity to become the change this world so desperately needs, the very change Jesus called us to be.

DO WE NEED TO PLAN?

Each group will be responsible for planning service activities for their service locations and their time out at other campuses.  WE CAN HELP YOU WITH WHAT TO DO…just ask.

Usually, groups come into Haiti with a VBS planned, we would suggest that you do the same.  Also, for RESTORE, we really want to challenge groups to focus on Haitian adolescents… they are often forgotten.  You could plan a TEEN BIBLE STUDY, or bring money for “COKE AND CONVERSATION” (where students and leaders walk through a town and buy teenagers a coke and talk to them about life, faith, etc),  for a sports camp or tournament, etc.

Please see page 7 of the NWHCM Travel Book for a few more ideas.

Check with your post office for a passport application, or go to the U.S. Department of State web page: http://travel.state.gov/passport.  Once you’ve applied for a passport… it can take as long as 3 months to receive it, so give yourself some enough time before your trip.

See page 5 of the NWHCM Travel Book for more details.

MISCELLANIOUS:

DO I NEED IMMUNIZATIONS/MEDICINE?

Everyone is encouraged to update their tetanus and influenza immunizations. We also recommend Typhoid and Hepatitis A and B vaccines, which provide long-term protection. You should consult your physician or local health department regarding these and other immunizations you may wish to receive.  Please see page 5 of the NWHCM Travel Book for more details.

IS IT SAFE?

Short answer:  Yes.  We have been in Haiti for 35 years… we’re Haitians who speak the language fluently and know the culture.  We have roughly 1,500 travelers from the states into Haiti each summer and are well informed about things happening all over the country.  Each group is given security and translators.

See Safety Letter.
